Class-Notes, September/October 1998

It’s been two years, and I’m still waithing for the semester to end. I must say though, paychecks are much nicer to receive in the mail than grades. I keep thinking I have to rush home to do some studying, while instead I realize that I can spend my non-work hours settled comfortably on my futon in front of my non-existent TV. Was I the one previously extolling the virtues of spending copious amounts of time in the hallowed halls of institutes of higher education? It’s the journey that’s the important part, right?

Someone famous has no doubt said something incredibly pithy about what it means to already be out of college for half the time we were in it. Unfortunately, I have yet to find such words of wisdom—but it gives me an awfully good excuse to beg you all for your thoughts on the subject, plus a word or two about what you’re doing. First prize: Your name in lovely bold print in this column.

Hopefully, as y’all read this, “y’all” will no longer be part of my vernacular, as I will have flown the coop to head back North for some job that, as my advisor so astutely stated, pays peanuts but is a heck of an educational experience. This is being written as the holiday season kicks in with the strength of a stiff breeze off Cayuga Lake. Though I have recently been relieved of the burden of that small nuisance called graduate school, it’s hard to imagine sitting down in May and reading this column in the magazine. So many choices— Boston , DC , California… naugahyde, papasan, or barstool? Let me start off by saying, for those of you who took the plunge into real life right after we left Schoellkopf so many moons ago, I admire you. And I will pay you handsomely for your secrets of survival out of the realm of academia.

I have to admit that some of this news is rather old. But, like a fine red wine, it only gets more interesting with age. A few months ago, Vivian Marie Rodriguez , BA ‘97, landed a new job as an account coordinator with Austin Knight, a recruitment advertising agency in New York City. Marie told me that although she repeatedly referred to the agency as “Austin Powers” during her interview, no one seemed to notice. This summer she plans to accompany Albert Q. Nguyen to Vietnam and Hong Kong. Joshua Holbreich recently climbed the corporate ladder at the William Morris Agency in Midtown Manhattan. He works hard for his money as the assistant to a literary agent and will undoubtedly find this year’s Bridges of Madison County . I ran into Jennifer M. Lagnado , MA T ‘97, at Zinck’s Night late last year. After completing her master’s degree, Jennifer became a science teacher at the Hommocks Middle School in Westchester County , NY.

Short list of ways to tell you’re getting old: You have a
(sober) conversation with your friends that includes the
words “401(k),” “health plan,” or “mutual fund.” Thankfully,
whenever I’m starting to wonder if I should start checking
for gray hairs, the Cornell Club of Washington, DC, sponsors
an event such as Zinck’s Night, at a place such as Lulu’s, a
downtown DC bar that gives new meaning to the word
cheesy. There was lots of drinking, more than a little
hooking up, and-because we’re all getting too respectable
for our own good-plenty of business-card swapping, not to
mention full-contact name dropping, otherwise known as
DC’s most brutal sport. (In case you’ve been dying to know,
Bill and Hil are always out on the town now that the First
Freshman’s flown the coop.)
