Class Notes, November/December 2002

As 2002 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on how my study habits have changed since I graduated from Cornell… make that deteriorated. I don’t know about the rest of our classmates, but I can’t sit through an episode of “CSI” without simultaneously reading a magazine and talking on the phone. Although I was focused enough for several Coca-Cola-fueled all-nighters my senior year, I now have trouble committing to an entire issue of Entertainment Weekly. Fortunately, it was a lot easier to concentrate on my studies back in Ithaca where my mobility was limited by snowstorms, steep hills, and guilt.

I’m glad to see some of our classmates submitting their class news on-line. Like newlywed Michael “Shep” Holland, alumni who pay dues through www.alumni.cornell.edu can also send in their updates. Michael reports that he hadn’t had a good reason to write since graduation, but this last year seemed to bring a flood of good news. “Last June I married Eliza Barton, who graduated from the U. of Pennsylvania in 1999 as a nurse-midwife. There were more than a dozen Cornellians in attendance, including Vanessa Jacobs-Lorena, Michael Intravaia, and Prof. Deborah Streeter as a special guest. We went to Hawaii for two weeks for our honeymoon (kayaking and hiking) before returning home to Hartford, CT. “Michael also e-mailed me a few lovely wedding and honeymoon photos that I would include in this column if it were possible. Trust me, they’re very nice. Michael adds that he’s been fortunate enough to return to Cornell almost every semester to guest lecture for Prof. Streeter for the Entrepreneurship Program. “Thanks to her glowing recommendation, I was thrilled to be accepted this week into Duke’s Fuqua School of Business Cross-Continent MBA Program starting later this summer. Looks like six years of slaving away at start-up companies will pay off!”

Class Notes, July/August 2002

There’ve been so few news leaks this month I can’t help wondering if our entire class works for the Bush White House. And tempting though it is not to let facts get in the way of a good story, I guess it would be a tiny bit suspect if suddenly the column was full of news of moves to Tuscan villas, marriages to, say, Jennifer Connelly or Heath Ledger, and collections of giant Lotto prizes. So, please, telephone, telegraph, telegram–send news. Forget scraping the bottom of the barrel–we’re getting so low we can see clear through to the ground. Help!

It is unseasonably warm and sunny today here in the City by the Bay, which prompts me to wonder how I ever spent four long, cold years Far Above Cayuga’s Waters. Remembering how life really was in “Ithaca, Centrally Isolated” has become quite a stretch, and being a sagacious 27 years of age, things of my hapless college days are now cast in this rose-colored glow. I seriously wonder if this is perspective, maturity, senility, or maybe the perfect combination of all. Write us here at Class Notes, and tell us what you think…

I never knew Jennifer Lynn Tzemis during my years as a Cornell undergrad or as a professional in New York City, but it’s obvious to me that she was deeply loved by her family: Stamatios, Nancy, Sophia, and Nicole Tzemis. In late November I received a few announcements, one of which was an invitation to Jennifer’s Mass service on Staten Island on Oct. 20, ‘01. Family and friends from various stages of her life, including her early childhood in Great Kills, Honors Club at New Dorp High School, her dance school, Cornell, and Merrill Lynch, came together to honor her “unique laughter, kindness to others, passion for life, and other personal qualities.” When the September 11 terrorist attacks occurred, Jennifer was a vice president, financial analyst at Fred Alger Management on the 93rd floor of One World Trade Center. Although most of us were not personally affected by the tragedy, I know we’re all thinking about Jennifer, the other Cornellians who lost their lives, and the families of the victims.

I hope this new year finds you and yours safe and sound. Though you’ve seen Cornell Alumni Magazine post-Sept. 11, this is the first column actually being written since then, so I thought we could pause before our regularly scheduled programming to let you know that our thoughts are with all of our classmates who lost loved ones in the attacks, and with the families and friends of our classmates Balewa Albert Blackman and Jennifer Lynn Tzemis. Jennifer worked for Fred Alger Management in the World Trade Center. Balewa was a junior accountant at Cantor Fitzgerald.
I’m writing this on a post-runner’s high. Dressed in my “United We Run” T-shirt, I ran my third marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon, in October. The marathon includes a loop around the Pentagon. I cried this year as I passed it, and again as a man ran by me dressed in full firefighter gear. As countless American-flag-covered signs waved this year expressed: “Pain is temporary, but pride is forever.”
