Short list of ways to tell you’re getting old: You have a (sober) conversation with your friends that includes the words “401(k),” “health plan,” or “mutual fund.” Thankfully, whenever I’m starting to wonder if I should start checking for gray hairs, the Cornell Club of Washington, DC, sponsors an event such as Zinck’s Night, at a place such as Lulu’s, a downtown DC bar that gives new meaning to the word cheesy. There was lots of drinking, more than a little hooking up, and-because we’re all getting too respectable for our own good-plenty of business-card swapping, not to mention full-contact name dropping, otherwise known as DC’s most brutal sport. (In case you’ve been dying to know, Bill and Hil are always out on the town now that the First Freshman’s flown the coop.)
But on to news that is not of national significance: Mikael McCowan’s moved out to the ‘burbs (I told you we’re getting old) while finishing his graduate degree at George Washington U. Ben Faulkner is polling for a small Democratic firm in Bethesda, while former Student Assembly Rep. G. “Jim” Papa is aspiring to be king of the Hill-Capitol Hill, that is-where he’s currently a committee staffer.
In non-DC news (hey, I’m trying here) Professor La Feber groupie Doug Mallery is off in Tokyo, trying desperately to remember the foreign policy he learned in History 313, so he doesn’t inadvertently cause an international conflagration. Actually, he’s working in the international public affairs division of Toyota Motor Corp. and taking lots of hardship trips to Thailand. “It’s definitely a different experience working for a Japanese firm, what with living in a sweet dorm, no cubicles, mad rush-hour trains, and lots of bowing,” he writes. If you’re Tokyo-bound, send him an e- mail at 6550933@tmail.toyota.co.jp. Doug also reports that former housemate (and LaFeber groupie) Will Gerard had a wild and crazy time with the Peace Corps in Albania. The US Marines had to evacuate him by helicopter, but after a three-week tour of the Balkan capitals (including Sarajevo and Pale), he’s finally back on American soil, sans luggage thanks to Austrian Airlines.
Matt Schwartz has traded San Antonio, TX, for Cambridge, MA, where he’s working as a research analyst at Industrial Economics Inc. Other Cornell-in-Beantowners: Anson Mayers, who’s a professional services consultant at OneWare Inc.
Jeremy Miller, who’s at Kraft just outside Chicago, had an indentured servant (ahem, intern) from Cornell: Josh Lindenmuth ‘98. Jeremy reports he’s attended a couple of Delta Phi-in-Chicago events, and he’s bumped into Andrea Stern, Doug May, and Neil Jain.
Dawn Chavez spent the summer as a camp program coordinator as part of her MA degree in environmental education program at the New Jersey School of Conservation. Amber Beal moved from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Cleveland, where she’s working for Pepsi. Her former roommate Tonya White visited for a (Coke-free, we presume) reunion.
Saiid “Sid” Nasr has a Hollywood address, but don’t look for him in the movies. (Full disclosure: home-sweet-home is a “seedy area of Hollywood with plenty of decadent surprises.” Hmmm.) Anyway, after spending the summer as a law clerk in the California attorney general’s office, Sid’s well into his second year of Loyola law school. He’s also racking up the frequent flyer miles-and the bar tabs. He reports he partied with Phil Baugh in Las Vegas in May, went to a Dodgers game with Chris Pennya and Jed Sonnenshein in April, and saw a gaggle of alums at the New York City bars. Among those seen were G. “Jeff” Milan, Tim Whelan, Dave Stein, Asaf Savir, Kory Wollins ‘95, and Jason Sadlofsky ‘95.
And-lest you think we could get through a couple of months without an exchange of rings-I bring you the Official Class of ‘96 Wedding Watch: Heather Caruthers married Stuart Miniman ‘95 last September. Bridesmaids included Sara Ende and Adelia Pimm. The couple lives in Boston, where Heather has been promoted to technical editor/Web coordinator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s radiology department. Tamika Collins married Randy Livingston in New Orleans. Cornellians in attendance: Ayo Imeokparia (a bridesmaid) and Vanessa Cole, who’s at Duke med school. Derek McCann married Erika von Drechsel at the Ritz in Marina Del Ray last May. Derek’s a rooms division executive at the ITT Sheraton in Anaheim, CA. (think Disneyland). Melissa Van Nortwick is back from a honeymoon in Italy with new husband Carl Kustell, JD ‘95. They live in Lancaster, NY, where Melissa’s an account manager at Procter & Gamble. Megan Waterman is married to Greg Salgueiro ‘95. They live in Norwalk, where Megan is an executive assistant for Oxford Health Plans. And last: Cheryl Dollard Smith’s husband is Robert H. ‘95. They’re building a new home in Parma, NY, which Cheryl says is near Brockport. Anyway, Cheryl’s a 4-H extension educator for the Orleans County Cooperative Extension, which happens to be run by Cornell.
Happy new year, y’all. Resolution One: SEND GOSSIP.
