Class Notes, January/February 1999

At our annual cheesefest (International Spirit of Zinck’s Night) at Lulu’s in downtown Washington, DC, I was so horrified by the numbers on the nametags—like the ’00s from the Cornell-in-Washington crew, and in one spectacularly horrible moment, an ‘02—that I proceeded to count gray hairs instead of collecting gossip. A few tidbits I did pick up: Lou Wolinetz , whose attempt to stay out of this column has apparently failed because so few of you write (hint, hint), lives in DC’s Mount Pleasant and schleps out to work as a consultant in Fairfax , VA. And Eric Horowitz ‘97 , BS HE ‘98, who was sporting a ‘96-‘98 nametag (he started with us but hung around to finish a whole new major), is spending a year at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.
Now, on to news of the non-Washington (and non-Monica) variety: Renzo Cerabino is making his way through Villanova’s JD/MBA program. He’s also just published a piece in the Loyola Intellectual Property and High Technology Law Quarterly called “Patent Bar: Issues of Quality Control.” We wish we understood what that was. Anyway, Renzo reports that he talks frequently with best friend and fellow ILR grad Mark Mead , who’s a labor relations associate with NY State Electric and Gas. Mark is a member of the contract negotiating team and the company representative for the board of arbitration disputes, and he also runs the Cornell Winter Internship program for ILR students.
Christine Lydon moved to Chicago ( Evanston , if you have to be so darn technical) to get an MS in biotechnology from Northwestern. “I’m glad I’ll be able to use all my Cornell experiences in winter (read: snow and sub-zero temperatures) out here,” she writes. Meanwhile, Ken Lacy managed to get as far away from Ithaca weather as possible. He picked up an MA in linguistics from the U. of Hawaii . Now he’s back on the East Coast, working on his doctorate at New York U.
Also in NYC: Raymond Lin , an information systems specialist at Forbes magazine, writes that he is looking for an apartment in Manhattan and “searchin’ for girls.” (He said it; we didn’t.) Cosmo ’s bachelor of the month column this ain’t, but we can try: Ray’s e-mail is rlin74@aol.com. Ray reports that Mike Tran , BS Ag ‘97, works for Coopers & Lybrand, Jamie DeSantis is finishing his third year of vet school at U. of Pennsylvania, Norman Young is in Alabama, and Simon Kim lives out in Washington State.
Elizabeth Boll , that’s Lt. Liz Boll to you, has just returned from Taszar Air Base in Hungary , where she was part of the NATO Stabilization Forces for the Bosnia-Herzegovina area. As if that weren’t adventure enough, she also finished a two-year tour at Yokota Air Base, just outside Tokyo . And along the way, Liz still managed to catch up with Jen Savage , Jason Fraser ‘93 , Jill Pitko , Leon Perkowski ‘93, and Chris Snyder . Her next assignment: an MS in physical meteorology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton , OH . Good luck!
More random classmate sightings: Vickie Littler is director of employee services for the Crown Plaza in Atlanta . Greg Marett works for the Laurel Group, a landscape architecture firm in Huntington , NY . He says Brian Reich and Konrad “Kurt” Duchek have moved to Greenwich Village .
And now, on to a section of the column that’s growing at an altogether alarming rate. Yes, it’s Wedding Watch. Wedding One: Sondra (Iacullo) and Ken Bogursky , who, let’s have a big “awww” in unison, now, met freshman year, were married July 12, ‘98 , in New Jersey . The wedding party included Sondra’s senior-year roommates Connie Lung , Barbara Yien , and Alexandra “Alexy” Yoffie , as well as Neil Sirota and Alan “Al” Brandstaedter . Also in attendance were Lillian Su , Lukas Neckermann (who flew in from Germany , where he works for BMW), Alvin Lu , and Sean Godbout . Julio Vijil had to miss the wedding because he started rotations at the U. of Illinois medical school, but he had managed to make it to the bachelor party a few weeks before in Atlantic City . Sondra and Ken honeymooned in the British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico , then returned to Philadelphia , where Sondra has begun rotations at Temple ‘s medical school and Ken is at Kulicke and Soffa Industries.
Wedding Two: Erica Paddock and Neil Salmon were married last September. Bridesmaids included Kerry Campanella ‘95 , Allison Werry ‘96 , and Peach, who wore a pink leash with white lace. Get your minds out of the gutter, now: Peach happens to be Erica and Neil’s dog, who made a quick dash down the aisle before going home with a neighbor. Guests included Jennifer Dubey , who flew in from Portland , OR , for the wedding fiesta, as well as Tracy Tomasello , BS Eng ‘97. The couple lives in Baltimore , a.k.a. Charm City , a.k.a. the City that Reads (where did that one come from?), where Erica works for Towson University Relations and Neil is at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Wedding Three (courtesy of the New York Times): Carolyn Broadhead and Alexander Schirm were married in N. Palm Beach , FL , on Oct. 17 ‘98 . Carolyn is the hotel event manager for the Marriott Suites in Bethesda , and Alexander president of International Motors, a Saab dealership in Falls Church , VA.
Wedding Four: Jennifer Conwell married Jeff Milde on June 28 ‘98 . The happy couple has bought a house in San Jose , CA , and adopted two Pomeranian puppies. Jennifer is in marketing at Exponent, a failure analysis company in Menlo Park .
And finally, Wedding Five: happy anniversary to Michelle Machicao and Lloyd Lee, MPS HA ‘95 , who married Aug. 16 ‘97, in Los Altos Hills, CA. Boldface names include Jan Freitag ‘97 , Susan Carlston Graven ‘95 and Martin Dixon , MMH ‘96 . Michelle is an analyst in the investment banking division of Goldman, Sachs in NYC, and Lloyd is an associate at Starwood Capital in Greenwich , CT.
Congrats to them and happy new year to you all. And here’s your first resolution: keep in touch. ‘Til next time.
