Class Notes, May/June 2001

Five years ago, what were you doing? I can’t remember what I was doing on this exact date, but I remember I was most likely 1) applying to grad school, 2) playing confrontational games of Spades with my roommates, 3) in Rulloff’s, thinking that I would never find nachos that tasted so good ever again, or 4) wondering what comes next.
Well, for many of us, grad school came and went. There’s been a divergence among classmates at this point—those of us who have never gone back to school, those of us who still haven’t left school, and those of us who have gone to school, finished school, and are now wondering why we left in the first place (this rings very Lloyd Dobleresque, forgive the rambling). And what comes next? I’m still trying to figure that one out. I’ve realized, being in the working world, that a lot of people define themselves by what they do–their vocation, or job, or chosen career path. It’s an interesting concept, but I’m not sure I buy it (maybe I should take that as a sign…). In a recent night out with some classmates, we found ourselves talking about this very topic, and agreed that college has an immense and immeasurable impact on how we think of ourselves. Still, a long five years later, I’m not sure if that points to the frenetic nature of my post-college life or the quality of my college life. I’ll go with the latter. And now, for the news…
Donna Nadel and Howard Kramer were married on June 4, ‘00 , in Westbury , NY . Cornellians sharing in the wedding festivities were Kati Wilhelm Robertson, Stacy Rosenberg, Stephanie Konsker, DVM ‘00, Jeff Karpf, DVM ‘00, Meredith Byer, Rachel Berman, Ellen Schiffer Berkowitz, Ben Rubin, Dave Epstein, and Paul Robertson, MBA ‘96. Howie finished medical school at Temple right around wedding time and is currently a resident at Temple Hospital in Philadelphia . Donna is a lawyer in Philadelphia .
On the very same day, just a hop, skip, and jump across the Triboro Bridge , Lauren Kalter and David Hass were married at the New York Botanical Gardens. Partying with the new bride and groom were Julie Schwartzman, Stephanie Schwartz, Stefanie (Schwartz) and Ryan Steinberger (who were married in September–congratulations!), Jessica Katz, Hope Levin, Joy Guidi, Marni Kanofsky, Jennifer Hale Rackoff, Jared Brandoff, Brian Gelbman, Matthew Middleman, Jon Feuer, Matt Allen, Alec Kimmelman, Greg Schahet, Nancy Rosen ‘95, Marc Stiefel ‘97, Samantha Youngman ‘97, and Stacey Block ‘98. Not only were these couples married on the same day, but apparently they honeymooned in the same spot!
The preface to the next wedding-related e-mail I got was, “It was about time.” Dating since their freshman year, James Nessel and Dyana Faella tied the knot on July 14, ‘00 in Rockland County , NY . On hand for the celebration were Alexis Farrell, Jessica Kaplan, Raissa Smorol, Debra Plafker (who received an offer for her new job teaching high school in Scarsdale via cell phone during the wedding festivities), Nick Goldin, JD ‘99, Carrie Susser, Dan Loewy, with his new wife Jaimee Schreiber ‘98, Sonya Lee, JD ‘01, Scott Goldsmith, JD ‘99, Andrew Rietbergen ‘97, John Rubino ‘95, MHA ‘98, Matt Ginsburg, Jarrett Gibson, Marc Saulsbury, and Alli Santacroce ‘97.
On Oct. 29, ‘00 , Andrea Fuhr married Alex Saporito ‘97 in New York . Andrea and Alex are currently living in Boston , working and preparing to start on their MBAs in the fall.
Reunion is just around the corner. Heck, by the time you read this column, it will be here. Amazing. It’s been five years for Courtney, Allie, and me keeping track of everyone’s ins and outs, and quite honestly, it never ceases to amaze me the diversity of interests, goals, careers, dreams, and locations of Cornellians from the Class of ‘96. Unfortunately, there’s not enough room in every column to include all the great news I’ve gotten (yes, there is other news besides weddings–it’s just a nice way to include a lot of classmates into our space in the magazine!). Teachers, veterinarians, analysts, world travelers, physicians, lawyers, leaders, designers, etc. Truly amazing. Keep writing! See you in Ithaca!
