Cornellians in the Olympics

The Cornell Chronicle reports that three Cornell students and one coach are competing on snow and ice at the Turin Olympics.

Ice dancer Jamie Silverstein, 22, will be ice dancing with Ryan O’Meara, 22, as one of three ice-dancing pairs on the U.S. team. An undergraduate College Scholar (designing her own major) in the College of Arts and Sciences, Silverstein is a native of Mount Lebanon, Pa., who now lives near Detroit.

Travis Mayer

Freestyle skier Mayer, 23, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a junior majoring in applied economics and management in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Mayer took second place at the World Cup in Oberstdorf, Germany, in December. Here is his web site: http://www.travismayer.com.

Figure skater Matt Savoie, 25, of Peoria, Illinois, was accepted by Cornell Law School but deferred matriculation until this coming fall so he could train full time for the Olympics. This year he placed third at the U.S. Nationals.

Melody Davidson, head coach of Cornell’s women’s ice hockey team is the head coach of the Canadian women’s hockey team for the 2006 Winter Games. She was an assistant coach for the 2002 Olympic gold medal-winning Canadian women’s hockey team.
