RSS Feed for this Site

Friday February 11, 2005 Category: Website Permanent Link

Now you can get updates from this site delivered to you via RSS. Here is the address to use: http://classof96.alumni.cornell.edu/index.rss.

If none of this makes sense to you, keep reading. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication, and it’s a way to have web content from blogs, newspapers, etc. delivered to you. Here is a good article on wikipedia about RSS: what it is, where it came from, and how to use it.

Both of the buttons on the left under the heading “Syndicate” can be used to subscribe to this site. The orange RSS 0.91 Feed buttons which have popped up all over the web signify that the content is coded in “Extensible Markup Language”, a relatively new standard for transmitting all kinds of data across the internet.

Probably the most common way to view content from an RSS feed is in a program you install and run on your computer called an aggregator. There are any number of free, shareware, and commercial aggregators out there. My favorite (for Windows), because it is so simple, is the freeware program SharpReader. You can download it here.

There are also a number of web services that allow you to subscribe to feeds, and assemble a customized page. One advantage is that you can log in and view your page from anywhere. Bloglines and Feedster are well-known, but my favorite is My Yahoo, I mean My Yahoo!. I liked it enough to put a button for that too: Add to My Yahoo!.

We hope that you find this a good way to keep up with goings on of the class and at Cornell. As always, if you have any ideas for content, or would like to contribute an article for the site, drop me a line at mgh5 at cornell.edu.
